More than 1,000 jobs are to be axed after insurer Independent Insurance went into liquidation.
PricewaterhouseCoopers, the provisional liquidators for the firm, said the 1,044 jobs will go immediately.
Areas affected by the job cuts are sales, marketing and the underwriting of new business, said PwC.
The majority of the redundancies will be made from the group’s centre in Cheadle, Cheshire where 377 staff will lose their jobs.
The other major jobs losses are in London, where 157 redundancies will go and 165 jobs in Edenbridge, Kent.
The remaining redundancies will be spread across the insurer’s operations.
Mark Batten of PwC said, “Regrettably, we have had to make staff redundant in those areas of the company concerned with writing new business. We are however very pleased with the response from a number of leading insurers who have expressed strong interest in taking on considerable numbers of staff.”
