The number of worldwide cases of cancer is set to increase by 75% in the next two decades, according to researchers in France.
The findings, published in the journal Lancet Oncology, have predicted that cancer cases will increase from 12.7 million in 2008 to 22.2 million by 2030.
The study by the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon argued that some types of cancers, such as cervical and stomach, are declining in developed parts of the world, but that is being offset by substantial increases in other cancers, such as breast and bowel cancer.
Elaine McNish, physical activity manager at Macmillan Cancer Support, said: "We estimate that 1.6 million cancer survivors in the UK are not physically active at recommended levels and therefore at greater risk of some cancers recurring and serious long-term health problems."
