Tesco is recruiting another 17,000 staff to deal with increased demand and ensure its stores are fully stocked during the Christmas period.

The supermarket will employ 5,000 permanent staff to add to its current workforce of more than 200,000.

It is also going to recruit 12,000 seasonal staff to work at its 730 supermarkets over the busy Christmas period.

The Christmas jobs involve both serving customers and behind-the-scenes work and will cover all areas of the store including checkouts, bag-packing, customer service, stock replenishment and Tesco.com.

The new recruits will include 8,000 working parents, 5,000 over 50s, and 4,000 students.
