Thomson Holidays is cutting 450 jobs after announcing plans to close its Glasgow call centre

Thomson Holidays is cutting 450 jobs after announcing plans to close its Glasgow call centre.

The company, which plans to close the site in December, said the move was a response to changing market conditions.

Sales director Derek Jones said the travel market had "changed beyond recognition" in the past seven years.

Staff at the Cardonald site said the closure was a major blow to the local economy.

One employee said the company had not informed its employees of the closure and that staff were shocked by the move, BBC Scotland reports.

"The company states it was open and honest to staff, yet it kept it secret and it was even on the radio news bulletin before we found out," he said.

A company spokesman said staff would be given help to find new jobs or retrain.
