City & Guilds has appointed Chris Jones as its new director-general.

He replaces Chris Humphries who left the vocational education and training body at the end of 2007 to head the new UK Commission for Employment and Skills.

Jones joins City & Guilds today (10 March) with the remit of ensuring the organisation continues to be a leading force in the vocational education arena.

Jones was formerly chief executive of Harcourt Education International, which published books for schools in the UK.

City & Guilds' chairman Michael Howell said: "Chris has the right business acumen and experience to ensure that City & Guilds will keep growing, so that we may continue to pursue our declared purpose, which is to increase prosperity for individuals, employers and nations."
