More than one million health workers are now being paid through the £300m NHS electronic staff record project, claimed to be the largest integrated HR and payroll system in the world.
The project was launched in 2001 and aims to have all 600 organisations in the NHS, or 1.2 million employees 'live' and on stream by Spring.
The electronic staff record is part of a programme of change in the NHS - the NHS Improvement Plan - and is designed to transform the way in which the NHS delivers both HR services to its employees.
The system uses Oracle HR Management and Payroll and was implemented by healthcare IT firm McKesson UK. It will replace 28 core payroll systems and 67 legacy HR systems.
Simon Willcock, NHS electronic staff record programme director, said: "We are delighted to have reached the one million-user mark because it really demonstrates how technology can be used to bring about cost efficiencies and service improvements in the public sector."
