National Work from Home Day today kicks off national Work Wise Week, with many employees taking the opportunity to work from home.

Up to one in eight UK employees already work from home at some point, with as many as five million workers believed to be absent today, according to the TUC.

Significant drops are expected in the commuter numbers, carbon dioxide emissions and stress levels. The 2006 Eddington Transport Study predicted that by 2025, congestion will cost the UK £22bn in time wasted.

Analysis by communications company NTL:Telewest Business revealed that flexible working could save local authorities £1.1bn in reduced facilities costs and improved job satisfaction for 2.1 million employees.
