CIPD chief executive Jackie Orme was paid a total of £327,000 in 2008-09, according to figures revealed in the institute's annual report.

The hefty pay packet included a £57,000 'variable performance bonus' - the subject of much controversy after Personnel Today exclusively revealed earlier this year that Orme had received this despite other staff suffering a pay and bonus freeze.

The report states that the bonus was "based on performance achieved against a scorecard of measures agreed at the beginning of the year. These included membership, financial, service development and strategic objectives".

Orme also enjoyed pension contributions of £48,235 paid into the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) staff retirement scheme, and £16,045 paid into a separate defined contribution scheme. 'Benefits in kind' totalled £14,000.

Added together, her emoluments totalled £405,000 - slightly less than the £428,000 her predecessor Geoff Armstrong was paid in his final year in charge.

Overall, staffing costs (excluding directors) were £13.3m, up from £11.9m in 2008. The cost of agency staff and consultants was £971,000 (2008: £860,000), which the report said was "in relation to delivery of strategic projects".
