This summer's Olympic and Paralympic Games will be among the safest ever, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) has predicted.
Nevertheless, environmental health will be critical to the success of the games, CIEH chief executive Graham Jukes has stressed.
The Games, which will take place in July and August, are expected to attract more than 500,000 visitors and 15,000 athletes, making it one of the largest mass gatherings of people this year.
As one of the UK's main providers of food-safety training and the professional body for food inspectors, the CIEH said it will play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety of the estimated 14 million meals served at the 40 Olympic venues, with the Games set to be the largest peace-time catering operation in the world.
"Ensuring public safety will be a huge challenge and a team effort across all the public health services will be needed," said Jukes.
