Northern Rock - reality kicks in......

Some of us live on this planet whilst some obviously don't..........

News that there will probably be some cuts in employee numbers at Northern Rock, should it be sold, seems to have 'shocked and angered' Union representatives.......

Incredible. Just what planet are they on? I wrote some time ago that the way this whole debacle was handled and the longer it went on - the more likely that job cuts would ensue.

I think the Union seems to forget that Northern Rock is bust. Bust. Bust. Dead. It has been put on artificial life support for a variety of half thought-through reasons. For many other companies they never get that option. Why is Northern Rock so special? (And don't be fooled by the the whole banking system crisis rationale).

Thus I am forever amazed at these reactions. This should have been anticipated. The good and probably smart employees will have already looked to leave (having to get used to changing jobs) or already left.

Its the way the world unfortunately works at times. We have to get over it and move on.

Of course, I suspect that the union would prefer nationalisation of the bank with no job losses, in an ideal way, to be paid for by taxpayers - some of whom would inevitably pay with their jobs in time. Its also how the market works. Of the two choices, scenario 1 is more equitable.
