Why the 'CIPD' has an image problem.........

I promised I wouldn't be back until 1st September but as usual something caught my attention this morning that I believe is important to bring to people's attention - and a problem for the profession.

The offending bit is on the BBC website's story about job losses where more than once the CIPD is referred to as the 'Chartered Institute of Personal Development' (Of course it may have been corrected by the time you read this). Small faux-pas it may be but it has big implications if this is how it is understood in the wider market-place.

Notwithstanding the issues of editorship and due diligence I think that this reflects a wider problem for the CIPD acronym and membership - something I have warned on several occasions.

I suspect that many practitioners would be aghast at being known as 'Personal Development' practitioners only - now there's a nice small box to 'box' the profession with........I am certainly not happy for one but then being a HCMI practitioner there's no uncertainty.......

Answers on a postcard.......(see you on the 1st September)

Maybe this says more about sloppy journalism than the CIPD

Hi Nick

No doubt sloppy journalism but I wonder who is doing the checking at CIPD for it to go unnoticed (still has not been corrected as at 20th August).
However there is a larger issue regarding the way in which the CIPD as an acronym is interpreted as personal development as it's not the first time I have come across this interpretation.

There are already rumblings from various quarters in the profession - as a professional I wouldn't be happy at either personnel or development in terms of describing the profession and I am not a fan of 'HR' either as I have explained on previous blogs (its demeaning) which is why I prefer human capital management or the HCMI as it is known for its qualification and Institute.

Either way, I think its another sign that the UK profession, at least, needs to take into account if CIPD is what people refer to as the main representation (currently)........

CIPD was an amalgamation of the IPM and ITD at the time (1995). I don't think this is representative anymore given the current advance in the profession's body of knowledge.....
