Today is Human Capital Management Institute day. Thus the HR profession now has a new body related to the representation and development of the people management profession.
Can I get you to turn away from the current carnage on Wall Street and its serious implications for all of us and concentrate on something closer to home, for a few minutes.
As you know the International School of HCM in London last year released the new HCMI qualification and it is currently recruiting for the 2009 programme.
Today the HCMI, as an individual membership is born. All HR practioners whether currently CIPD or not (and also extends managers) can join with no membership fee due until January 2009 (£24.95). The press release does the job of giving further insight on this matter and why it is materially different to current expensive membership schemes.
The HCMI is a not-for-profit organisation interested in advancing the professional competence and thus value contribution of HR/HCM practitioners and the HR (HCM) function. Plain and simple. And it's designed to keep it that simple.
The HCMI is not into social cause PR. It is not a private company masquerading as a charity.
The belief is that professional/function reputation comes from the job done at ground level and not from political lobbying.
As I have commented before, for too long the profession has suffered from a fractured and should I say 'parochial' nature of the basic core curriculum taught. At some point this has to be confronted and corrected. Also, we're promoting 'authenticity of professional competence' and not just a singular social cause-based dimension which seems to have hijacked the profession too often.
The HCMI is an inclusive membership (open to all) with varying gradings (again see press release).
Of course - no fanfare as it's not deemed newsworthy by some just like the School wasn't.
The HCMI in conjunction with ISHCM is looking to hold two HCM summits a year - one in Birmingham and one in London (starting this November). This HCM summit is the definitive article (not like some imitations around).
The Summits are a return to basics for more austere times - a concentration on relevant CPD and free of supplier exhibitions - unless the membership deems otherwise.
The HCMI - 'Governing by the professionals for the professionals'.
As the inaugural Honorary President, I can confirm there won't be a mega-bucks salary because it isn't needed. The Institute is a lean organisation. An executive committee will be announced in due course based on members' selection (individuals serve 12 month terms).
SO 'COME ON DOWN' AS THEY SAY AND JOIN.
Remember in the HR profession there are now two official membership bodies The CIPD and The HCMI. We will be keen to ensure that all public domain press comments are factually correct from now on.......
So spread the word round as we can't always rely on press channels to provide information.
I look forward to any comments but more importantly I look forward to welcoming you as members..............its a new phase............
