Between a Rock and a Hard Place

In an attempt to escape the clutches of the evil recruitment agencies, we today turned to advertising a vacancy.

It's a pretty unusual step for us, but when you've been recruiting for the same role for 2 years you need to broaden your horizons as much as possible.

However, this has had an effect that should and could have been foreseen.

Noise and Confusion

Confusion often reigns supreme in our workplace, and today was certainly no exception.

Being the high flying, strategic department that we are, we often get landed with tasks such as booking hotels for visitors to our site.

In a few weeks, we have a major visit, with 15 people requiring rooms for several nights.

Accusations

I was welcomed to work today by a somewhat strange sight.

Was it a fire juggling midget? No.

Instead, it was an utterly absurd and borderline libellous notice from one of our normally sane Team Leaders, ranting against the employees of our company as a bag of his had gone missing.

The Simple Life?

It has been said that in life, nothing is simple.

This statement is particularly true with regards to recruitment.

As mentioned in a previous blog, I have been dealing with a candidate who was requesting that all sorts be covered in his relocation allowance.

A New Nemesis

I collected yet another nemesis today.

However, this was a little different to the usual assortment of idiotic recruiting agents or employees, as I have never met or spoken to this person, and never will.

His name? Art Fry.

Relocation, Relocation

A new dilemma today, this time concerning relocation allowance.

We have just offered a senior job to someone currently living abroad, so on the face of it you would think we would bend over backwards in terms of relocation allowance.

However, the individual is due to come back to the UK in 6 weeks anyway, at which point they would be technically homeless thanks to other personal circumstances.

An Emotional Wreck...

Today's title does not refer to myself, but rather to one of our team leaders who pretty much lost the plot today at work. Some may say she lost it a long time ago, but that's another story...

After an argument with her Senior Team Leader this morning over the state of her files, which then turned into an argument about workload, it was decided that it would be best for myself and the Senior Manager of the area to have a word with her.

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions

Today it was time to decide which candidate would be successful for the role that we have spent the previous 2 days interviewing for.

The panel was made up of myself, and 3 of the 5 Executive Board members.

With 4 high flying, fingers-on-the-pulse individuals in the room (ahem), I did not expect too much time to be spent on the decision.

The Longest Day

Do you ever get to the point where you are bored of the sound of your own voice?

It's not something I am personally used to, as what comes out of my mouth is usually either amusing or informative.

Today, however, was different.

Bang to Rights

Internet usage at work has been all over the news recently, mainly with regards to the use of 'social networking' sites.

I personally don't see much of an issue with it, as long as it isn't dominating work time and you're not being abusive about your employers. Thankfully I have an anonymous blog with which to do that...

Agency Wars

The 'Agency Wars' continued apace today, much to my continued amazement and frustration.

After spending so long trying to win our business, you would have thought that every single agency would have pulled out all the stops to impress, rather than leaving a trail of chaos and disillusionment.

The latest act of war consisted of sending a guy for interview who had been given a completely different job specification to the one that we gave to the agency.

Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics

A job applicant today made the rather stupid error of crossing me before I'd even received his application.

Firstly, there was the phone call, rather abruptly informing me that I must meet with him to discuss the vacancy further.

Despite being annoyed by this, I responded as politely as possible, whilst declining of course, and would have been happy to let this go.
