Relocation, Relocation

A new dilemma today, this time concerning relocation allowance.

We have just offered a senior job to someone currently living abroad, so on the face of it you would think we would bend over backwards in terms of relocation allowance.

However, the individual is due to come back to the UK in 6 weeks anyway, at which point they would be technically homeless thanks to other personal circumstances.

So, all in all, not really a classic 'relocation' case for the likes of Phil and Kirstie to deal with.

However, in the list of things that the individual would like covered in our offer, we had items such as the final flight from the country in which they currently reside, and legal fees for the sale of their current house.

As our policy clearly states, we only grant relocation allowance on things that are attributable to moving for the job.

As the person concerned is due to fly back regardless, and as their house was for sale long before we came on the scene with a job offer, I would suggest that flights and legal fees are not really anything to do with us.

It has disappointed me that the candidate has even asked for the allowance to cover these, as I think it is verging on taking liberties.

Quite what the Directors will say when we meet to discuss it tomorrow is anyones guess...
