(N)ever the cynic...

You may recall that last week I wrote about our plans to help integrate our foreign exchange workers both into their new jobs and new lives in the UK.

Generally, once we’d sorted out a few reservations and got a final plan together, the proposal has been very well received.

You’ll notice the use of the word ‘generally’. Inevitably there is always one who wants to spoil the party…

Our proposal and associated guidelines are not meant to be a formal company policy, more of an informal document to help remind everyone of what we should try to do to help people settle in to new surroundings.

However, one of our most senior managers is somewhat troubled by all this, and wants to tie the proposal up in various committees for approval.

Quite why he would want to go to these lengths for an informal document is beyond me.

If I was a cynic, I may suggest that it is because he has a high proportion of the exchange workers reporting in to him, and as a miserable old so-and-so he wants to avoid any hint of having to socialise with them, as our document suggests should be done, even if just a one-off.

Just to reiterate, I’d only think that if I were a cynic…
