A Valuable Lesson

January 10, 2008

We're currently undergoing a large recruitment drive for one of our departments, and have received over 150 applications for the vacancies so far.

Over the last few days we have been logging the applications, and started to make a note of those that we will want to interview.

As an interesting experiment, we thought we would hand all of the forms to the departmental manager to see what he came up with in terms of potential interviewee's.

The results were somewhat disturbing, but sadly not too surprising.

When we received the forms back, the Manager had provisionally labelled 30 to interview, with the rest to reject.

I'm not sure if there was a method to his madness, but his choices seemed to be utterly random.

There is definitely a moral to this story.

Never, ever leave other departments to their own devices when it comes to recruitment. They just can't be trusted.

To be fair that goes for most aspects of our work...

Margaret Stanford:

Have you ever thought that line managers may perceive HR's choices as utterly random? I've certainly been accused of that in the past.

I've even heard said, "never ever let HR get more involved than in recruitment than they absolutely have to."

Keep up the good work
