Cloverfield

On a Monday, it’s tradition in many offices to discuss one’s weekend activities over morning break.

Every so often, I am reminded why I limit this to a weekly activity and stay clear of such conversations for most of the week.

Today saw one of those occasions.

At breakfast, I was sat with someone who I very rarely speak to. We got on to the inevitable subject of what we had done over the weekend, and I mentioned that I had been to see the new and rather excellent blockbuster, ‘Cloverfield’.

Before I had time to even bite into my toast, I was subjected to a lecture about the film’s political subtext (apparently it’s all about the West’s thirst for oil…), and hidden messages.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I like to consider myself a bit of an intellectual (you would never have guessed, I know), but what happened to just enjoying a film? Why subject me to nonsense about subtexts and hidden meanings?! It’s a film about a monster attack!!!

Some people obviously have far too much time on their hands.

If I get stuck with the same person on a Monday morning again, I’ll be sure to claim I’ve done absolutely nothing with my weekend.
