One of our junior managers is leading us on the path towards a race discrimination case, and no matter how much we point this out to him he doesn’t seem to want to change his course.
You may be aware that we have been undertaking a sizeable recruitment drive in recent weeks.
Such mass recruitment always throws up a few issues, but this really could be a massive one.
2 people currently working together for another firm, doing the same job (which is unrelated to the job that they have applied for), applied for the same position here, for which we had multiple vacancies.
One is white, the other is black.
The black candidate has previous experience in the area we are recruiting for, while the white candidate does not. As such, you might think it would be obvious which way we would go with this one.
However, after being rejected for another position here recently, the recruiting manager does not want to see the black candidate. He is also basing his choice on rumours that the candidate is a troublemaker, and the fact that he has had previous bad experiences with a relative of the candidate.
This would probably just about be ‘ok’, had we not interviewed and offered a position to her white co-worker, who has no discernible experience.
The black candidate is now asking a lot of questions, and we want to put things right by interviewing her, but the recruiting manager does not want to budge.
While I am confident this is not because of any racist tendencies, it is utterly infuriating that the manager refuses to acknowledge the potentially disastrous situation we have found ourselves in.
