Human Resources: A Glorified Taxi Service?

Every so often I am reminded why I hold most other departments within our organisation in such contempt.

After a few weeks of being almost cocooned away from them, with very little interference, I was given a stark reminder today.

One of our employees had to be taken to hospital this afternoon after a minor fall. In line with our procedure, a member of our First Aid team did this.

After a couple of hours, the individual was ready and willing to come back to work, and phoned his manager to ask about getting back from the hospital.

I would have thought the obvious response would be to pay for a taxi, or get a member of the First Aid team to collect him. Unfortunately the manager deemed fit to ask me if anyone in HR would be able to collect him.

My response, to burst into laughter, was simply a display of my incredulity at such a request. Suffice to say, the manager took some offence, but quite frankly I couldn’t care.

If anyone should be offended it should be the rest of the HR team and I. Do people really think we have nothing better to do than act as a taxi service?
