New Starter Poses Problem: To Sack for Utter Stupidity, or for Lying?

The recent recruitment drive has lead, as you would expect, to quite an influx of new starters within our business.

Many are already turning out to be excellent additions, but some of the others are just proving to be anything but.

The most recent example of this came today.

One of our ‘newbies’ was off yesterday as she felt unwell and was unable to get out of bed. In line with our process, her local manager took her through a ‘return to work’ interview today, which confirmed this as the reason for being absent.

Upon finishing this interview, the new starter went to her manual handling training with our Health and Safety Manager.

Unbelievably, when she arrived she stated that she would not be able to participate in any practical activity as she had hurt her back yesterday whilst helping her sister to move…

So, rather than being ill, she was shifting boxes around for her sister. Unluckily for her, the Health and Safety Manager sits within HR so knows everything that is going on with regards to absence.

The only decision to make now is whether to sack her for lying, or for being so utterly stupid…
