A Great Excuse for Non-Notification of Absence

June 19, 2008

I had to sit down with a young gentleman today who had broken company rules regarding notifying us whilst absent.

He had been off for a week, and only called in on the Thursday, when he should have called in every day (the only reason he called on the Thursday was because we had phoned him on the Wednesday).

The purpose of the meeting was to establish whether there was a valid reason that may mitigate any potential disciplinary action, but it quickly became apparent that there was not.
Already facing almost certain disciplinary action for the non-notification for the first 3 days of non-notification, he sealed his fate when asked about why he hadn't rung in on the Friday, when he had done so on the Thursday (though he was 2 hours late ringing in on that day as well).

His response? To accuse me of being snotty on the Thursday due to him phoning in late.

I could barely contain my laughter at his pathetic accusation.

For a start, that in itself is no excuse to not phone in, but that does not take in to account the FACT that I was not in any way snotty with him.

I pointed out the facts as I was entitled to do, but to say I was snotty is ridiculous. Thankfully I have several witnesses in the office to back up my side of the story.

I can't wait to issue him with a warning.

Yikes:

I gotta say... folks like you are the reason that HR gets the bad rap that it does today.

Nothing like having a department full of hall monitors instead of business people to drive an organization forward.

Are you sure this isn't one of my employees? Sounds so familiar. Ugh! Best of luck.
