Internet reputations precede job candidates

Louise Triance, author of Louise's UK Recruiter Blog, references new research from Viadeo about "internet reputation" or Net Rep (about which see more in next week's Personnel Today).

It seems recruiters are "Googling" potential candidates by putting their name into internet search engines such as Google.

This can give them unexpected insights into an individual, such as: compromising photographs of their stag do in Ireland on photo sharing site Flickr; the highly amusing, but illegal video of their train-surfing exploits on video sharing site YouTube; or revelations on MySpace that they have posed semi-naked for a men's magazine (why won't pepsigirl81 be Guru's 'friend'?).

Guru decided to Google himself, and typed "Human Resources Guru" into the search box. This very blog was returned as the second entry (after a very interesting Personnel Today article).

And where do you think self-styled US HR guru Dave Ulrich came - nowhere, that's where.

There is only one HR Guru, and you're looking at him!

PS. Note to Guru's blogging nemesis, Peter Gold at Hire Strategies, who mocked Guru's "SEO-friendly URL". My search engine optimisation is working very nicely thank you (or so my web developer tells me!).

Maybe your web developer has a finger missing? As for pepsigirl, she doesn't know a good thing when she sees it.
