Having some time to kill in town this morning between breakfast and the pubs opening, Guru popped in to see an old friend at Number 10.
After exchanging pleasantries and secret handshakes with the sentries on duty, Yours Truly wandered up Downing Street, knocked on the front door and was delilghted to see his old buddy. Yep, there he was, lying on the floor as always when visitors arrived - the prime ministerial entrance rug.
Oh how Guru fondly remembers the chats he had standing on that rug with the two great prime ministers of our time. Both Winston Churchill and John Major would happily pour a brandy and chat away about employment issues and England opening partnerships.
Now, of course, it's all changed. Guru was ushered to a side room and made to listen to Tony Blair talking about the reforms of the welfare state. Well, mainly he listened to Gordon Brown talking about reforms of the welfare state, as the transition of power became increasingly plain to see.
As the agenda was unveiled - all young mums back to work and role for the private sector - it became plain that this was, in the words of Pete Townshend, meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
Guru wandered off for a lunchtime pint thinking he probably wouldn't bother going to see that old rug again for a while.
