When did phones and laptops become benefits?

July 31, 2007

An interesting question today from Disciple Stuart on the issue of new employee benefits packages.

Stuart asks:

I refer to a number of recent human resources job advertisements in Personnel Today. Is it now a trend to offer as part of the benefits package for an area HR manager: a car, a laptop and a phone?

A car I can understand, but to try and tell me that a laptop and a phone constitute additional benefits makes me laugh. It would be rather tough to do the job without them.

Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs (HMRC) may not find it so funny, but might be very interested in the values assigned to these so-called benefits in kind!

Oh the joys of work/life balance, being on call 24/7 with the 'benefit' of a phone and computer!

Guru has already made his own views on the perks of the job very clear, and is right behind Disciple Stuart on this matter.

Personally speaking, Guru would consider a new job to be more attractive if it came without a phone and a computer.
