Guru not invited to blog league table

September 28, 2007

Blog aficionados will be well familar with the now-commonplace blogger tactic of creating blog league tables.

Guru has (inexplicably) not yet been inducted into any of these human resources blog halls of fame, and now notes that his arch enemy Peter Gold of Hire Strategies is celebrating his own inclusion in such a list (albeit at 97 out of 100) and rubbing Guru's nose in it.

In response, Guru has decided the best course of action is to expose this league-table scam for the self-serving propaganda that it really is.

technorati rank

The idea is simple, ingenious and fraudulent. Blogger A wonders how he can increase traffic and inbound links (authority) to his blog.

He decides to publish a league table of the top blogs in his sector - based on some arbitrary, subjective measure. All the bloggers he lists are so delighted to have been included in this 'roll of honour' that they respond by:

a) Commenting on Blogger A's site with profuse thanks for their inclusion.
b) Writing their own blog post about how they are amongst the top blogs in their field.
c) Linking back to Blogger A's league table post.

Want to improve your Technorati Rank by several thousand and increase your authority score by 10? Then publish a blog top 10 and watch the links come rolling in.

The latest exponents of this 'art' in the HR blogosphere are: Bootstrapper (Top 100 HR Bloggers); and The HR Capitalist (producing the bi-weekly top-25 HR Blogs Power List).

Some might see this mini-rant as sour grapes on Guru's part. And they'd be damn right.

Well spotted, you are a lot smarter than you look! You have to admit though, quite a clever idea.

Guru -

Good post. I wish your take on Technorati worked for me the way you described, but it hasn't. See my postive reply at http://www.hrcapitalist.com/2007/10/guru-just-calle.html and be on the lookout for the next poll, which I am sure you will be a part of.

Thanks - KD

Rick:

Don't worry, I didn't make it onto any of them either.

Here's my take on the whole blog awards process. Something about the human need for hierarchy, I think.

About Guru

Guru is Personnel Today's notorious HR commentator. He's been working in HR for far too long and observes every passing management fad with a mixture of anger and amusement. His blog is the one thing saving his long-suffering wife, Mrs Guru, from having to endure too much of his ranting about the big HR stories of the day.
