Living on borrowed time

October 10, 2007

The news that the government has ‘borrowed’ Tory ‘policies’ in its pre-Budget announcement comes as no surprise to Guru – nor other Personnel Today bloggers – as when he was a mere ‘young shaver’ Yours Truly used to indulge in the occasional bit of ‘borrowing’.

In fact, so enthusiastic was his mania for other people’s things that he quickly acquired the nickname ‘the Magpie’ and was frequently taken to task by his carers over hogging all the toys at the nursery. Luckily it was just a phase, which he grew out of before going to Big School.

Gordon Brown sees to be going through just such a phase right now. In the infancy of his premiership, he’s been reaching out and grabbing everything in sight – Tory policies, a sprinkling of liberal ideas and… er even the thoughts of chairman Ken across the river.

Yet, tragically, Brown and his government, Cameron and the Tories and even legendary 'man in a coat' Sir Minger seem to have inherited much of the hot-air generating machinery bequeathed to them by Terrible Tone – with all parties claiming all kinds of things all the time to anyone who’ll listen.

They could start their own balloon festival, there is so much hot air about. And what with the ‘meeja’ adding its own tonnes of carbon dioxide to the mix its no wonder there is so much concern about global warming.

Strangely it has been Cameron and Mingo throwing all the toys out of the pram, while Monsieur Brun has been hoovering them up and spitting them out as his own chewed up policies.

Of course, sceptics might say that Gordon Brown is now living on borrowed time. It certainly looks like he’s been wearing a borrowed suit.
