Happy New Year?

January 2, 2008

Having awoken from his traditional festive week-long slumber at a secret location in the west Midlands, Guru this morning surveyed the landscape of a fresh new year.

That is to say, he had a shower, shave and the other one, and then browsed through the FT with his traditional New Year’s three-hour-long breakfast.

Well, it seems that the brave new world of 2008 looks remarkably similar to the tired old world of 2007.

Gordon Brown is talking – with the same funny jaw twitch – about welfare reform. Employers are seeking – with the same lack of success – to solve skills shortages.

Strikes are being called, and then called off. Commuters face increased train prices. Equal pay claims are going to cripple councils.

The credit crunch continues to, well, crunch. Northern Rock faces more uncertainty. Trade unions warn the government is not doing enough; employers warn it is doing too much.

Guru feels tired already. Just three hundred and sixty-five days until 2009…
