Drumming up support

February 28, 2008

Drummers, Guru has long suspected, are the leaders of a superior race, living quietly(ish) among us, waiting for their moment to take over the world.

Surely Ringo Starr knew something we didn’t as he 4/4 beat his way into human consciousness, first with the Beatles, then more prominently with Thomas the Tank Engine.

And what about training consultancy Innerbeat, which Guru revealed was using drummers to solve the all-encompassing skills crisis?

Well now, the final proof that cymbal-bashing will one day replace talking as the language of humans. Blur drummer Dave Rowntree is to stand for the Labour party at the next general election.

The 43-year-old Parklife legend has been selected to fight the seat of Cities of London and Westminster, currently held by Conservative MP Mark Field.

Whether Rowntree will campaign for enforced Mockney accents, chirpy pop songs and baggy jeans remains to be seen.

However, in Guru’s opinion, Field should be quaking as though a thousand drums were being beat in his ears. Drummers are the past, the present and the future. Luckily for disciples, Guru is pretty mean with the old hi-hat, having been a rock drummer in his youth.

Perhaps one day Prime Ministers’ Question Time will be more about lost tracks than missing discs.
