You dancing? Guru's asking

March 4, 2008

The fall of communism – as well as reuniting families, feeding starving children and reducing the number of leaking pipes in domestic Britain – has been a massive boon for Guru’s blog.

On those rare days when Guru finds himself without a bizarre HR story upon which to weave his web-friendly word-web, all he has to do is look east. Beyond that curtain, which used to be iron but now more resembles one of those tassled numbers you get instead of doors in cheap restaurants, lies a rich vein of employment madness.

Most recently crossing Guru’s grey-dar – it’s like gaydar but more Eastern European and heterosexual – was a story about police officers in western Romania.

It seems that these cold-meat-loving law enforcers are being taught to manage traffic through – wait for it, disciples – ballet classes.

Yep, 20 members of the Timisoara community police are being taught to dance by two former dancers of the small town’s opera ballet troop.

"The aim is to develop an ability to regulate traffic and achieve elegance in their movements, which will not only be agreeable to the eyes but could also help drivers waiting at a red light get rid of their stress or sadness," said the head of the community police, Dorel Cojan, while pirouetting and eating a gherkin.

Guru wonders if this idea could be extended to public sector staff in the UK. Yours Truly feels that the 90-minute delay on his commuter train this morning would have been made much more bearable if accompanied by operatic announcements and cheerleader-style dances by platform staff.

Imagine British nurses taking lessons from Girls Aloud in how to dance erotically while taking blood and emptying commodes. Perhaps Prime minister Gordon Brown should set the ultimate example by performing the cha-cha while telling taxpayers they each have an extra £2,000 debt because he’s nationalised Northern Rock.
