Leadership: va va voom

April 17, 2008

Sure, he scored some great goals and put in some terrific performances in Renault TV commercials, but does Thierry Henry really deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Mahatma Ghandi, Martin Luther King and Mother Teresa?

According to Met Police HR chief Martin Tiplady, the answer is yes.

Tiplady listed the former Arsenal striker alongside the three legends as some of history's great leaders in a speech to HR professionals at the HRD 2008 conference in east London yesterday.

Guru, frankly, is flabbergasted. Yours Truly would not pick Henry to lead a dance, let alone a team of coppers. He'd have all the rest of the team doing the hard work and then when a suspect was finally lying face down with his hands behind his back, Henry would put on the handcuffs before wheeling off to celebrate.

Tipady went on to explain that the Met Police has trained even its most senior members of staff in the art of leadership for the past eighteen months. The early signs are that this approach has been successful, he said.

Let's just hope that the force does not follow Arsenal's regular example of flattering to deceive before falling away when it matters and achieving nothing. That, as Henry would say, is not va va voom.
