First impressions count. And in customer-facing roles that can be more important than anything else – as all savvy recruiters know.
So its good to see that the purveyors of all things burger-related, McDonald's has at last seen fit to dispense with its 'rugger burger' stripey polo shirt and baseball hat look and smarten up its staff uniforms as a 'mark of respect' for its staff.
Trouble is, it looks like the uniforms – apparently designed by 'legendary' Princess Diana dresser Bruce Oldfield – were rejected by and airline or a cleaning company.
Yours Truly is not entirely convinced. Not convinced that anything apart from the material, has changed, and not convinced that this is all merely another ploy in the company's bid to rid itself of the 'McJobs' tag.
Scarves at jaunty angles and white or 'biscuit' (surely that should be 'bap') shirts will be worn by managers, while the customer-facing staff will get... erm... polo shirts in black and mocha (or drab brown to the uninitiated). And baseball caps. Hmmm. And if McDonald's was really serious, it would surely have issued staff with BigMacs to shield them from the precipitation across the nation.
What to wear when selling a burger is obviously a critical concern, and Guru genuinely hopes these dynamic new uniforms inspire staff at the king of burgers. Although, he notes, what to wear is clearly not a major concern for the good people who buy the nutritious processed patties, as our previous McDonald's munchers story ably demonstrated.

Its really interesting how many virtual column inches the new burger togs have precipitated and the angles seen by different commentators. I first read about this at BBC news online. I find that one of the interesting things is that managers and servers need different togs.
In their coverage the BBC initally gave the impression that all managers were men, as mention of scarves was made. After I complained they corrected this (see http://suehewitt.typepad.com/blogpositive/2008/04/macdonalds-new.html) Interestingly Guru makes no mention of ties so maybe there has been a McGender revolution in Burger Land since last week.
