Mundane tasks and exciting punishments

April 24, 2008

You have to love those Norweigans. The latest example of their inate Nordic ingenuity is a tool for alerting people in boring jobs that they are in danger of losing concentration.

"We might be able to build a device that could be placed on the heads of people that make these easy decisions," Dr Eichele, of the University of Bergen, told the BBC.

"We can measure the signal and give feedback to the user that their brain is in the state where their decisions are not going to be the right ones."

Well, it may surprise you to know that Guru himself came up with a device that could be placed on people's heads to make sure they gave mundane tasks their full concentration.

It was called an axe, and just the sight of it was enough to improve focus and work rates 10-fold.

Of course, this latest headset is a much more sophisticated piece of equipment. It works by picking up the brainwave pattern seen 30 seconds before mistakes were made in clinical trials recently.

Guru has long understood this phenomena, having observed the glazed look on Mrs Guru's face half a minute before she burns his toast in the morning. That's why he installed the axe in the kitchen.
