IT specialists. Don'tya just luv 'em? Guru certainly does, as no section of the workforce better demonstrates the need for time management training than this bunch of ne'er do wells.
Yours Truly was reminded of their incredible ability to misstime things by his enforced absence from this very space - eagle-eyed disciples might have noted the wall of silence emanating from the Guru blog these past few hours.
For it seems the background magic that powers all things 'blog' was in need of some local repairs, so a crack team of IT specialists was dispatched from a small box on the top shelf of the resources cupboard where they live.
Now, there are many generalisations lobbed at the IT fraternity - set-in-stone hairstyles (too much curly hair, no hair at all or big fringes), stripey tanktops, thick-rimmed NHS specs, nerdy trousers, massive computer bags slung over sloping shoulders, tendency to naval gaze, lack of inter-personal skills, and so on. (Although Guru admits this also sounds like a description of HR man - Robbie Williams unlookalike 'Stephen make Moir day' excluded, of course.) And Yours Truly wonders whether all this lack of style is what makes the IT crowd so apparently useless at hitting their own deadlines.
After all, keeping hair that unkempt, finding a rank tanktop ('ranktop' could be a useful new word) to wear and maintaining the stickiness of the eternal plaster that is always used to hold NHS-style specs together takes some dedication.
But why does it have to take precedence over the deadline for fixing things that has been set by the IT nerds themselves. When will they ever learn? They do not have to set themselves unrealistic deadlines. They could look at past attempts to hit deadlines, realise that they've never quite managed it, and adapt their current timings accordingly.
Of course, such implacable... um... logic is clearly beyond the Mr Logics of this world, although thinking about it, they are clearly not of this world at all.

While Guru applauds the... um... bluntness of the post, being a 'family blog' host he had to edit the four-letter comment to maintain the blogs commitment to equality and diversity.

Although, frankly, I'd be a little bit unnerved by the family that sat down to read your blog together...

As would Guru. Having said that, disciple Mary once informed Yours Truly that she does, indeed, sit down with her family to enjoy the inner workings of the HR world – occasionally using the Guru column as an educational tool for her two young children.

I like the idea of our IT people being called 'Specialists' is that because they have a six month waiting list, or because if you want something done, its better to go private??
