A day without a telephone

February 19, 2009

Yours truly has screened his fair share of calls in the past, avoiding telemarketers at tea-time and Mrs Guru the rest of the day.

But it appears redundancies are now providing a reason for some offices not to answer the phone at all.
The unique response by a clerk and recorder's office in El Paso, Texas, to the cutting of 19 staff in late 2008 has been to boycott all phone calls in January.

The order by Bob Balink applied to three offices in an attempt to ensure staff didn't take any valuable time away from record keeping. The offices are responsible for important updates on voter registration, elections, land transactions, motor vehicle registration and marriage licenses.

Members of the town council have complained on behalf of the luddites who aren't yet on the interweb, and the hippies who can't drive their gas-guzzling 4x4s down to the local office.

As for how effective the process has been for the remaining staff at the US-based offices, Guru (and the press at large) has no clue. Balink, the mastermind behind this plot, was unable to be reached.

Go figure.
