Gold stars for Foreign Office staff

March 12, 2009

Many parents will be familiar with the concept of reward charts - which give their little urchins stickers or gold stars for good behaviour, resulting in a special treat at the end of it all.1151_LRG.jpg

Yours Truly and Mrs Guru have often tried this tactic on their little blue devils, with varying degrees of success.

Guru was surprised to learn that the Civil Service is now experimenting with a similar scheme. The Foreign & Commonwealth Office's latest change initiative includes bright stickers for staff with messages such as 'You're a Star' and 'Congratulations'.

Patronising? Just a little.

Managers' union the FDA has kicked off because they claim it coincides with respite journeys for diplomatic staff in dangerous countries being cut. They have branded it "childish" and a "gross waste of public money".

Guru can see their point of view.

But wait! Apparently staff also get a pair of 3D specs with the booklet as well. How cool is that? Guru can now picture FCO staff sitting down to enjoy Spy Kids 3D and dreaming of a more exciting life.

About Guru

Guru is Personnel Today's notorious HR commentator and dispenser of workplace wit and wisdom. He was once an HR Director but is now the antithesis of good people management. He is right-leaning, most certainly politically incorrect and ever so slightly misogynistic. He is also lazy, married (to Mrs Guru) and refers to himself – as all self-important people do - in the third person.
