Jade Goody - the unemployed mourn her death

March 23, 2009

Guru hasn't got much time for Jade Goody but - judging by the scenes outside her house today - quite a lot of people have, literally, got a lot of time available.

Disciple Rob has sent Guru a message (in fact, it's more of a rant) about the number of people laying flowers - Princess Di style - outside her Essex abode following her death yesterday. BBC Radio Five Live even has a reporter outside her house, for the love of God.

"Can there be any more damning an indictment on our society than this? Who are these halfwits? And more importantly, 1) why aren't they at work (or at the job centre), 2) why aren't their children in school, 3) shouldn't they be concentrating on paying off their store card/credit car/loan shark debt rather than spunking £20 on flowers, balloons and teddy bears for a dead, talentless, bigoted nobody who was only famous because she got drunk and showed everyone her vagina on national TV?"

Rob makes a good point. Perhaps the government should set up a mobile jobcentre outside the Goody residence and encourage people to sign up after laying their floral tributes?

There's a ready source of low-skilled labour there to be tapped in to. That's until Kerry Katona kicks the bucket and they all take the day off to go and mourn her.

Better still, let's have a public holiday to honour the reality TV stars that are no longer with us - that way the rest of the workforce can benefit to.

Well, I think it is a sign of the times - more redundancies, particularly effecting retail etc, indirectly effecting the female population more.

The female population being more likely to have a sympathetic bone in their body (please note that remark is vaguely directed at "disciple Rob" and you, Guru) and able to give time to delivering floral tributes. Also more likely to be part time employed and full time "home-makers".

Probably already been to the job centre, seen the queues and decided to be pragmatic and do the job search online later.

I wasn't a Jade fan either, but in view that a majority of a workforce might be - in interests of motivation and employee care - having a heart might be politic.

Hi Guru,

first of all: Please excuse my very bad English... I'm a German fan and I love your blog!

Here comes my comment to Jane Goody:
What about the positive side-effects for the British economy? Thousands of (unemployed) people are buying flowers, so the flower-industry can recover a little from the global economic crisis! Further benefits: TV can sell more adverts when millions of mourning unemployed are watching the Goody-house-reports on their tv. So tv can pay its bills and credits. And probably some taxi-drivers benefit too (driving mourning unemployed to the Goody-house).

The children of the mourning unemployed learn a good lesson: Best thing you can do when you have nothing in brain: Go to tv, become a big-brother-tv-star and you will never have to wait in job-center-queues!

So Jane Goody has done a lot for the global economic recovery. You should be greatful to her!

About Guru

Guru is Personnel Today's notorious HR commentator and dispenser of workplace wit and wisdom. He was once an HR Director but is now the antithesis of good people management. He is right-leaning, most certainly politically incorrect and ever so slightly misogynistic. He is also lazy, married (to Mrs Guru) and refers to himself – as all self-important people do - in the third person.
