MPs expenses: what's the most outrageous claim you've seen?

May 12, 2009

Swimming pools, dog food, horse manure, light bulbs, a mattress, nappies, nail polish.

No, these are not items on Guru's latest shopping list, but just a few of the things our 'honourable' members of Parliament have claimed for in their expenses.

Guru once submitted an expense claim for hospitality expenditure while discussing Ugandan affairs, but has refrained from including anything else that could not be considered a genuine business expense.

Guru wonders what the most outrageous expenses claims they have received are? The best response gets an exclusive Guru mousemat and a mention in Personnel Today.

Simon Nicholson:

The most outtrageous expenses claim was from Hazel Blears when she claimed she had done everything within the rules!!
(ie stating her London residence was a second home to get the allowances, but telling the IR it was the main residence to avoid CG Tax)

Adam Flight:

Labour minister, Mrs Follett claimed for security patrols between 2004 and 2008 - which started after she was mugged - totalled £25,411.64! And this is a work related expense how? Danger money for being so hated within her own constituency perhaps?

The US Marketing Director of my former company (a very creative thinker) spent 2 hours trying to persuade me that it would be cheaper for us to buy him a private plane than a company car. He argued that "time lost" commuting from Long Island to Connecticut was costly and he could be of more value to the company if he could land his plane on the field next to the office. Needless to say, I was not persuaded.

We've had a claim toothpaste!
