Wookey Hole witch appointed

July 29, 2009

Common sense has prevailed and bosses at the Wookey Hole Caves tourist site in Somerset have appointed a female witch.

It's ironic that the new witch has been announced on the same day as the Women and Work Commission criticised the government for failing to tackle gender stereotypes in career advice.

Is the job of 'witch' a gender stereotype? Guru reckons it is. Apparently there were some transsexual candidates for the job, which would have been a neat way round the problem.

Disciples will remember that Guru was fretting over the fact the witch vacancy was also open to men. But former estate agent Carole Bohanan - now known as Carla Calamity - has beaten hundreds of cackling rivals to the job.

Carla has actually managed to find a job where people will actually be less scared of her than previously. She promises to bring a bit of glamour to the role, but that's not what witches should be about.

We want haggard old crones, not Bewitched-type beauties.

After the mass promotion given to the best job in the world the island caretaker job earlier this year this was also a clever marketing exercise to bring attention to an attraction. Wookey will now see a lot more visitors compared to last year and in a recession as well. Be interesting to see just how many more visitors they will get. Well done to the person who got the job and the marketing people........

Being a witch can be a dangerous job, in terms of avoiding hunts/threatened drowning/buckets of water. I can only hope for Carole's sake that the government consider amending the Single Equality Bill to include witches as a new equality strand.

I visited wookey hole last week with my husband and i am sorry to say it was a complete waste of £30.It might not have been to bad if we could have just paid to visit the caves but they assumed we wanted to go on all the kiddies things and so charged us this rather expensive ammoun. The visit to the caves was rushed and the guide told us a story so far fetched u had to laugh.other visitors were turning away when they saw the price for a family 2 adult and 2 children and when aked on my way out is it worth a visit i had to be honest and say no not at all.I cannot think a pretend whitch will make anyone wont to visit this park again .
