Prompted by an apparently worsening rodent infestation, Baroness Finlay of Llandaff kicked off by asking the chairman of committees "what measures are being considered to improve pest control in the Lords' part of the Palace of Westminster?"
Lord Brabazon of Tara responded by assuring Lady Finlay that an independent pest control consultant and a full-time pest controller were on the case, including the "blocking of mouse access points".
It then emerged that a "mouse helpline" was being operated for concerned MPs and peers to report sightings. How many calls had this received, Lady Finlay demanded to know.
His lordship confessed he couldn't tell her the number of calls to the hotline, and also bemoaned its effectiveness. "The trouble is that when the person at the other end of the helpline goes to check this out, very often the mouse has gone elsewhere," he noted glumly.
