Soccerball scandal has negative impact on performance

May 23, 2011

A disciple - working in the sports industry in Manchester - informs Yours Truly that there is something rotten in the state of... erm... Olde Trafford. Apparently, there has been much furore in the media about having its hands tied by some kind of 'superinjunction' over the goings on of some unnamed soccer fellow.

But this alleged set to, prompts Guru to wonder if there's also been a superinjunction taken out on HR creativity when it comes to behaviour in (and out of) the workplace?

What employees do both inside and outside the office environment, or indeed on and off the pitch, has always been fraught with dangers. It is clearly difficult to pinpoint when does private life become a public concern?

Yet when the two world's collide, especially if a third world - that mystery world that is planet media - gets involved and wants its pound of flesh. Such a state of affairs cannot go on and calls on the wider community to embrace the right models if it doesn't want to get caught with its pants down.

Yet after a quick look at the evidence (or lack of it), Yours Truly can confirm that while there are many theories out there, the top-down 'Welsh' model has clearly been given the elbow.

Still, with sportsmen on a par with, say a rock star who's still looking spry and gigs relentlessly, dipping in and out of imo generation D-listers just to keep his hand in, Yours Truly is not entirely convinced by his disciple's tip off - indeed you could say he's a bit of a doubting Thomas - and would welcome suggestions from his loyal readers (and, indeed, his disloyal ones) as to what the rules of engagement entail when it comes to 'workplace romance'.

And while Guru does not profess to know too much about the soccerball game, even in that field of endeavour he feels that its stil true that playing away can seriously affect peformance.

Something for businesses to bear in mind - especially ones managed by people called Alex.
