What's in a name? Quite a lot apparently. The new all powerful equalities body starts work today, replacing the three long standing commissions.
What we thought was going to be called the Commission for Equality and Human Rights is, in fact, going to be named the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
Why the last minute change you may ask? Why was nobody told about the name tweaking until the commission sent out press information yesterday (Sunday).
As far as I can tell, there doesn't really seem to be an answer. This morning's press release just states: "As of 1 October, the commission will be called the Equality and Human Rights Commission."
No explanation why, no reasoning, just those few words.
The CBI was still calling it by its old moniker in a statement sent out this morning, as was the BBC on its website.
The CEHR website no longer works, and to make matters worse, there is no redirect to the commission's new site.
I eventually found the website address at the bottom of an email sent out by the new body. That was by pure fluke as my Outlook thought the email was spam and sent it to my junk folder.
Hardly an auspicious start by chair Trevor Phillips and his much hyped commission. Let's hope its communication with employers doesn't follow suit.
