CIPD | The Jackie O mystery continues

If it wasn't at an event hosted by her employers, it could have been a set up.

With all eyes on Jackie Orme at her first public appearance as chief executive of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, her inaugural duty was to introduce the chairman of leadership advice body Pertec Consulting.

Easy? Then try pronouncing Pentti Sydanmaanlakka after too many Pepsis.

Orme had clearly been practising, however, and managed to not only say his name right (well, he didn't look offended) but drop in a gag about Finns and saunas. There are more than three times as many of the wood-enclosed heat rooms as people in Finland, apparently. What this means about the quality of the country's HR leaders, I'm not sure, but it was about all we got out of HR's new Jackie O all day.

Refusing a request to speak about her new role on our podcast, she hurried off to other duties at the World Federation of Personnel Management Associations' HRD 2008 International Learning and Development Conference and Exhibition - which is almost as much of a mouthful as the name of our friend from Finland.

Her press bodyguards did, however, promise a full interview next month, which we look forward to with baited breath. If you are keen to know what the new leader of your institute and profession is all about, well, join the queue.
