In one of the most extreme cases of flexible working we at Personnel Today ever seen, it appears an executive director at Fenland District Council in Cambridgeshire will be working from his home in Adelaide.
Not Adelaide in the UK (and Google Maps has nine options), but Adelaide, Australia.
Yes, Mat Taylor, also the council's chief finance officer, wanted to leave his £100,000 job to move Down Under in October. But the council has arranged for him to work one day a week over the next 12 months to manage its £18m annual budget from Australia by video link and email.
And they'll be paying him the pro-rata salary of £20,000 to do it.
The Taxpayers' Alliance jumped on the decision, saying the move was far from an efficient us of our levies. "It's a bit worrying when ordinary families are struggling to make ends meet whilst council executive are sunning themselves in warmer climes."
But obviously, the council has found the glass half-full.
Sanda Claxton, the council's chief executive, said the only alternative was to pay an interim manager £800 a day until a replacement was found, and that Taylor's "excellent finance management" had played a large part in improving council finances
"We are the first local authority in the country to fully utilise modern technology to deliver a highly cost-effective solution," said Geoff Harper, Conservative councillor for Doddington. "Retaining [Mat Taylor's] services is much more cost-efficient than bringing in an interim finance director."
But what does Mr. Taylor have to say about all this?
The British-born Taylor told the Daily Mail that he and his wife had decided to emigrate to Australia with their three young children because it "seemed like an interesting place to go".
"We chose Adelaide because of the Mediterranean climate and there's a good standard of living," he added. He is planning to spend a few months 'relaxing' before looking for a full-time job.
Given the difficulties Australia has had with its tourism slogans in the past, that triple whammy might just do it for them.
Australia
Good standard of living
Mediterranean climate
More interesting than England
What more do you want?

I don't see what is unreasonable about this.
So I've never heard of Mat and don't know how successful he has been, but I'm assuming he has done a decent enough job.
Is it better that he has nothing to do with the council anymore? Better that someone without the knowledge and history take on the role at similar or more cost?
Why give him stick for moving away and having a lifestyle that he chooses? whilst still giving the council the support that they need?

Are you serious? If it was a MNC he was working for, then I could understand, because businesses are not limited by national borders.
But for a council which has responsibility to the UK taxpayer to continue employing someone who has made it clear they don't want to support the UK taxpayer in the UK anymore, there's no excuse to keep him on.
There should be limits on flexible working for both time and proximity. Number-crunching can't be so hard that there is no-one else in the country who can do it.
