Seeing the 100 Best Companies to Work For glossy supplement in the Sunday Times yesterday, with the CIPD's logo plastered all over it, got me wondering how much they would have paid in sponsorship.
Not only do they get their logo in the supplement, but also an intro written by chief exec Jackie Orme, four display ads and sponsorship of a 'special award' for leadership.
This is the second consecutive year that the CIPD has sponsored the list, which employers of all sizes clamour to feature in. This year's number one big company is KPMG - although you would presume the voting was completed before its workforce had to move on to a four day week in order to save their jobs.
The sponsorship question is one that has been asked before by Nick Higgins on his HC Global blog last year. He dug into the murky area of government subsidies for Best Companies, the firm behind the list, and all the ramifications from that.
The CIPD announced its sponsorship of the list back in February last year, but there was no mention of how much it is paying for the privilege.
Nor is there any mention in the institute's annual report or financial statements for 2007-08. I'm sure I'm not the only one connected with the HR community that would love to know how much the CIPD forked out in sponsorship for this year and last
A call to the CIPD press office brings no joy, with them refusing to disclose the value of the two-year sponsorship deal.
Ho hum, I guess we have to assume that whatever the sum is, it's worth paying out its members' subs on.

I guess the other way of finding out is to ask the Times how much it would require in sponsorship to produce the list.

Whatever the cost, the inclusion of the Dilbert cartoons in the supplement rendered any "investment" by the CIPD a bit of an own goal. Catbert the Evil HR Director is funny to read but in this context only serves to perpetuate the stereotype of HR. They would have done better to sponsor an award for HR Excellence, after all, there was a deafening silence from the HR community throughout the supplement - despite all the hardwork from our professional colleagues.
