We are looking at introducing Occupational Health into our organisation, and I would be grateful if anyone has recommendations of companies that provide a good service, and also an indication of cost. We have had one quote so far and it was higher than I thought it would be.

I outsourced OH with the last company I was working with and found that the cost was higher than expected. However, when you consider that, if you chose the right supplier, you can access a far broader provision of services than those in house. Defning the core service was the key, with "extras" on a pay as you go basis. If I did it again, I would spend more time understanding the business perception and expectations of a OH function - with the outsourcing we moved from a broad "nursing" service to OH and it proved a long road to travel from dispensing pills to the current practice. The preferred supplier is BUPA. Price is relevant to the service and size of organisation - if you want to discuss further send me a note hrcsltd@wanadoo.es.

Your local NHS Occupational Health Dept may well welcome any income generation. The advantages with many of these as in our hospital, may be fast tracking for physio referrals, some consultant referrals, and good links with GP's for reports. Each hospital is different in what it may offer ofcourse, but they are usually good value for money and have good networks with other health professionals. Other benefits are that they serve the local community so have a good idea of that the local problems are and have usually had experience in dealing with them - e.g. in my area, ex miners with chronic lung conditions, deafness, HAVS and poor joints.

Is this a service you have or currently use? I am currently researching an occupational health service provision for my organisation of approximately 100 employees and it would be interesting to hear from someone who is using this service.
