We have recently decided to introduce the use of assessment centres in our recruitment and selection procedure. After much research we have opted to design them in house. Many literature and articles state that you can purchase ready made activities and exercises to run at assessment days. I have not been able to find any sources which offer this facility. Does anyone know of any such companies or has done something similar in the past? |

Emma, I think you have decided to take the right approach. Designing them in house ensures your get the exercises that meet your recruitment or assessment needs. I think the main starting point is knowing what you want to achieve from the assessment centre. This will help determine the product you purchase or design. In the past I have used SHL Saville & Holdsworth. They produce a range of psychometric tests, OPQ's and practical intray type exercises. The trouble is the cost and you have to be trained by SHL in order to use their products, and yes you have guessed it they charge for that too!! www.shlgroup.com Another good resource is this site www.businessballs.co.uk Has some very useful tools which can be adapted to suit your needs I'm sure - and its free. But really nothing beats desgining your own excerises. Think about the competency or skill you are wishing to assess and then how best to test/assess for it. For example - I recently helped a financial service client recruit telephone advisers. So I set up a range of job related problems - which they should be able to deal with at their level. They then phoned the cleint (recruitment line mgr) and talked him through the problem, as they would in the role. Simple, but worked very well. This practical exercise was backed up by a competency based interview. We used the results from both to make a balanced and more informed decsision. Intrays are good too, and I'm sure if you looked within your organisation you could identify real problems that have occurred in the past adapt to suit your needs. If you need any help please feel free to drop me line. adrian.dobson3@ntlworld.com |

I have used variety of exercises bought from Assessment & Development Consultants Ltd - very good and reasonably priced too.....one In-Tray exercise was found particularly challenging by candidates for a senior management development programme! Contact: www.ADCltd.co.uk. You don't need a licence to use them either! Good luck Carole Moxon |

| I will shortly be creating assessment/developmen centres across the UK for my company and would be greatly for any information regarding plans for managing employee expectations and the communication approaches you have found useful. | |||

I have used a variety of exercises from ASE (www.ase-solutions.co.uk) and have found them easy to use as well as being reasonably priced. They also offer highly competitive rates for developing bespoke exercises which are more suitable than off-the-shelf. I have also used: A&DC and have found them to be ok and SHL - were far too expensive! Hope this helps. Mike |

In my experience, it is very hard to find an off-the-shelf exercises for assessment centres that totally meets my or my clients needs. Each role will have unique competences, and even if the exercise is broadly relevant, the paperwork associated with assessing the candidate objectively will need adapting. Try Quest Partnership - they are very flexible, and will often adapt an existing exercise for your assessment centres, to make sure that costs are low, but you still get a good assessment centre exercise design. They also provide a lot of assessment centre consultancy and will validate your assessment centres for you to make sure they comply with EO and DP requirements. |
