Last month I was asked how much we had spent on training in the year and what measured added value it had brought to the business.

A difficult question - it got me thinking - "Does Training Do What it Says on the Tin ?" As a result I wrote a paper for my Cheif Executive - How to Create an L&D Strategy that will pay for itself and add measured value to the business !

If anyone would like a copy I would be delighted to send it to you - please e.mail me at :
william.doherty@ntlworld.com - he liked it and next year we will be in more control and focussed on ROI.

If still possible, I would be interested in reading the paper you have written on L&D strategy for two reasons. Firstly because I work within the HR Profession and secondly I am in my final year of my CIPD studies, and have elected Learning & Development as an elective, so would be interested to read around the topic.

My email address is skhera@uk.ey.com

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ How to create an L&D strategy that pays for itself Mike Morrison 21/01/2008 08:10

Hi

One way to start this process that leads to a value added L&D strategy is to conduct a SWOT analysis on both the existing business plan of the organisation and on your existing L&D strategy document. (if you do not yet have an L&D strategy then a gap analysis on what you do now and the business plan will give you the content and context for the L&D strategy) Then looking at the two see where the gaps are.

These gaps become part of the L&D Strategy for the following year.

When undertaking the SWOT process you will also be able to identify measures that can be used to measure success - and thus added value.

No L&D or training activity should be undertaken without an appropriate organisational diagnosis or needs analysis being done first. Doing so leaves us open to not being able to show strategic alignment and harder to show added value.
