Does anyone have a list of core competences for their multi-skill engineers.
I think the matter is subjective, but my boss disagrees and wants a list!
Anything as a starting place would be good
Thanks.

My list, which is in use in our for the sophisticated engineering environments we work in, is as follows:
Attention to Detail
Background/Experience
Leadership Potential
Fine Motor Skills
Motivational Fit
Oral Communication
Positive Attitude
Process Monitoring
Qualitative Professional Skill
Quantitative Professional Skill
Responsibility
Safety Orientation
Teamwork
Work Ethic
Work Pace

I can expand on how to measure these if you wish. Just show your response through this web site.

Regards,

Richard

Nigel,
The first thing that you need to establish is whether your boss is talking about real "competencies" - i.e. behaviour which will help your engineers to perform well - or technical capabilities which describe similar or different types of engineering skill levels. The first is about high performance and application, the second is more a description of basic requirements, which might be what he means by "core" competencies.
Which of theseis most relevant will depend on what you want to do with them. Is the issue about staff development, pay, recruitment or career progression, or something else?
If you can answer these questions you will at least then know what you are looking for. General lists that people send you from other orgainsations wll be more or less useful dependng on which if these issues you are looking at, as well as what type of engineering roles you are concerned with.
This is a bit vague, meant as a cautionary note. I am happyto expand if you e-mail me on
simon.spindler@papcl.com .
Good luck!
Simon
