Last week I was preparing the L&D 2007 budget and I reflected on a few key issues ?

Q : Where is L&D going ?

Q : Should L&D report into HR or might it be more

effective / credible if  it reported into Operations ?

Q : What are the big players doing about e.learning and

what should I do ? (Sony, IBM, etc)

Q : What new skills and knowledge will I need as a training

manager in the next 5 years ?

Q : Is the CIPD helping me or should I join the CMI or

      IMC ?

To answer there questions I have produced a research White Paper which
I would be happy to send out to anyone FREE on request - "The Future of
L&D 2006-2010". Just send me an email :
william.doherty@ntlworld.com - Q : "Maybe it is time to create our own
Inst of Learning and Development !"

There is an Institute of Training and Occupational Learning in place (ITOL). Perhaps you may find value in discussing your ideas with them? Their website is www.itol.org

Hi Will
Interesting questions.
Did you know that the CIPD has a L&D network? - I do but getting on to it is not easy!
As has been mentioned www.ITOL.org.uk  is one organisation to consider.
Some years ago I approached the CMI about setting up a learning institute under its banner as I thought this was the logical place for learning - but they were not interested.  The IMC (under the CMI banner) no longer exists, it merged with the Inst for Business Advisors and is now the IBC - Institute for Business Consulting (www.ibconsulting.org.uk), but the focus is far from learning.
Another option is www.trainerbase.co.uk They are working on forming a trade association - mainly for independent learning consultants, however if there is enough interest I am sure a class for 'employed' trainers will be allowed.
With the growth of the web and on line networking, has the days of the building based membership passed? are people more engaged with forums like this, tjonline, trainingzone etc?

Delighted - please send an e.mail to william.doherty@ntlworld.com and I will send a copy of the paper return.

In answer to your question about an alternative to CIPD for trainer - Trainerbase is there. In addition they are having a national conference and anyone wanting to join them should contact :  Peter at 01239 711544 and it is called "The Association of Learning Practitioners."
