The Amersham and Wycombe college is conducting research for the Learning and Skills council about the employment of ex-offenders. We are currently looking for companies that have policies on recruiting offenders and people that have experience of employing offenders. We want to create case studies about these employers. If you would like to participate in this, please email santhony@amersham.ac.uk, or if you have any information regarding what companies employ offenders, it would be greatly appreciated. The work aims to provide a better understanding to employers on aspects of recruiting offenders, in order to reduce discrimination.

Sally,

While at Sainsburys I had an active campaign targetting and hiring ex offenders - not sure if it up and running but give them a call and ask for the Head of Recruitment. I now that Tesco did/do the same thing.

hope that heps

Sally

When I was at M&S I did a lot of work with Sussex Probation. By working with them we were able to take on some staff in store.

Try Sue Scales at Shoreham Store as a contact. Or Head Office, CSR Team, Freda Pinner.

All the best

Thank you for that Isabelle, that's interesting to know.

We are now working on the development of employer seminars, to address their recruitment needs and offer information on important issues such as The Rehabilitation Act 1974.

It would be very interesting if any employers could suggest ideas about what should be included in the seminars, and what information they would find helpful;

Any particular issues? what risks are you most worried about? what would help give you confidence to employ an ex offender? what would your reasons be for not employing an offender?

The seminars will be designed with some interactive work.

It would be great to hear people's thoughts and ideas, and your views or experience of employing offenders. The seminars will be held in the Thames Valley, so if you are a business in this area that would like to attend please get in touch.

Also if anyone could offer advice on how to best reach employers it would be very helpful. We will be contacting Chambers of Commerce and similar organisations to attend meetings to increase awareness of the project.

A few thoughts in relation to your questions…

Potential issues/risks would include

-         Risk to other employees, as an employer there we have a Duty of Care to staff

-         Risk to the brand/company name

-         Confidentiality, obviously you would not wish to publicise the individuals history but at the sometime need to manage effectively to help them settle into the workplace – how do you juggle the two without making it apparent to other employees?

Reasons to not employ

-          Type of conviction, e.g. in Retail you would not take on someone with a background in robbery

Confidence

-          Support and good working rapport with Probation Officer

-          Good References

-          Evidence of any work experience (where possible)

Hope this is of some help?

Isabelle
